On the walk back to town, I passed by a Japanese tour group that had a professional camera crew with them. From what I could understand from our conversation in broken spanish, they were shooting an “adventure” television program. (They shot a video of me dancing while listening to my ipod and looking at the mountain. I wonder where it will end up.)The rest of the walk was pretty cold. Parts of the trail were covered in ice! And this is *summertime* in the southern hemisphere.

Eventually I made it to the main attraction on the hike, the views of Mt. Fitz Roy. Even on the loveliest day, the mountains can be covered in clouds. I could see the nearest peaks, but could barely make out the massive ones lingering behind them. It was still really pretty.

Parts of the trail were really wet. Almost like you were wading through streams and ponds. I wonder what it’s like here in the rainy season.

This morning I woke up shortly after sunrise and noticed the sun was shining through the window. So i hopped out of bed quickly and started hiking, to make the most of what might have been a brief sunny period in a long rainy day.The hike I chose starts in a valley with some beautiful viewpoints of the snowy peaks in the distance.

I hiked out of Torres del Paine National Park, took a bus for three hours back to Puerto Natales, then connected to a bus to Argentina. I stopped in El Calafate to buy some groceries, then connected to a bus headed for El Chalten, the access point for the Fitz Roy mountain range. Along the way I saw blue skies for the first time in a while. By the time I got to El Chalten it was raining again.
